BLACK DOORS

They add drama and sophistication to any room.
Black doors instantly update any space and they look oh-so chic...

Here are my black doors, can't wait to paint the walls gray!
I wish I had a before picture. The white doors were so boring and blasé.

So, would you paint your doors black? I promise, you won't regret it!

  1. Love the black doors. My front door is going high gloss black next week when the weather warms up. I am trying to convince my hubby on the interior black doors. Still working on that one :) What paint did you use?

LOVE the black doors!!! Maybe I will try it out. So if you paint one interior door black, I assume you would need to paint all the interior doors black on the same level (with an open floor plan). Btw...painted my entire house different shades of grey about 8 months ago (except the kids rooms)....completely love it.

    1. You will want to paint every door:) I started on the main level and then couldn't wait to do the upstairs! It just keeps spreading, the bathroom doors are next, I think! Would love to know what grays you did!!

  5. Really looks great- I wonder, since the woodwork stays white, if I could do some doors hot pink?

  9. Hello! I have arrived via the lovely Christine at Bijou & Boheme, as you posted a comment on her most recent post about the rugs and her weekend... At any rate, I just wanted to say hello, and I am thrilled to have found some more inspiration for fabulous interiors. Love the black doors. Have you heard of Bronze Tone? All of our doors are that color, and I love the rich texture and depth they add to the room which may otherwise be boring with white! At any rate, hello and happy to have found you!

  16. Oh yes ma'am!! Every interior door in my house has been painted black and I wouldn't go back for a million dollars. I first heard about this little trick from Cote De Texas...she said it would make these cheap, builder-grade doors look so much nicer and more substantial. She was right, LOVE!

These are some hot-cha-cha pics too. Have a great weekend!

    1. So sorry for the delay!! I hope you found one you loved!! Looks like you did! I used Tricorn Black from Sherwin Williams but when I ran out I used left over black paint from my front door and realized it wasn't very different. So, unless you are going deep black and wanting charcoal or other hues in it, black is pretty much black....

We just painted all of the interior doors on our first floor black. The exterior of the front door was already black. My husband HATED the idea when I suggested it and really tried to get me to change my mind. Once it was done he could not believe how beautiful they came out and how they elevated the feel of each room. Now he brags to everyone how I convinced him to paint all of the doors black. Next, the handrail and the stairs.

    1. WOW! This made my day! Way to go! I am so impressed and so glad your husband couldn't talk you out of it! He should be bragging, you're genius:) Oh, how I want pictures...I'd love to paint our handrails and stairs but must admit I am finding that to be a bit daunting! You could be the motivation I need.

Thinking about painting my white doors black, but would like some opinions... Flat, satin, or glossy? Color suggestions? The exterior of my front door is dark brown (can't change it, HOA rules), will painting the interior of it black look ridiculous? Also, like someone else mentioned, I guess once you do one door you pretty much need to do them all (downstairs & upstairs)... Only problem with that is my 1/2 bath (on first floor) is a deep pumpkin color, don't really want to paint it black - can I just paint the hall-facing side of the door black and leave the bathroom-facing side the cream color it is? I'm going to have the same issue with my master bath, if I paint my bedroom door black do I have to paint the mb door black, too? I'm also considering doing my stairs black & white - risers white & treads black? Handrail black & spindles white? Thoughts? Btw, my wall color is SW Kilim Beige...
    Thanks for the input!! :-)

    1. I love the look of glossy, but it is definitely personal preference. Most interior doors are semi-gloss..much easier to clean! I say paint the interior of your front door!! It will look great. Also, you do not have to paint both sides of the door black. The general rule is to paint the edge of the door that same color as the side of the door you see. For example, when I open the door going in to my son's room, the hinge side is painted black because you can see it from the outside (black side of the door). On the inside his door is white so the outside edge is white because that is the side that is visible in the room. I hope that makes sense. You can absolutely leave the bathroom door cream on the inside! As for your master, I don't think you need to paint master bath doors black in addition to the bedroom. It's okay for them not to be the same but it's hard to say without seeing it. I am going to get looking and thinking on your stair question! Could be our next post:) I love black handrails and treads, my initial though is white spindles but let me give that some thought first and we'll get back to you!! Good luck! I know you'll love your doors! I have never looked back on my black doors, still love them!!

I love the black doors and plan to do soon! Did you use an acrylic paint?

    1. I believe most Benjamin Moore latex paints are an acrylic paint. I did not not use oil based paint.

Did you use a roller or a brush to paint your doors? I am afraid of streaks.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The roller is good to help eliminate brush marks on the flat surfaces, but I did use a brush on my doors because of all the grooves. Just be sure to go with the grain! There are a lot great how to's online:) good luck!!!

What about the door with the 'lattice' inside the glass?? I want to paint my doors black, but I don't think I can access the white lattice, since it is built in between two panels of the glass. Do I leave it white, or is there a way to open the glass? The door is like your posted one about 'can't wait to paint all the walls grey'...

  37. I totally agree with you! Black doors exude drama and sophistication to any house or room that you have the door in. Do you watch “Keeping up with the Kardashians”? Have you seen Kourtney's and the main house? It has a black and white theme for the whole house which looks so mysterious and dramatic, right? I absolutely fantasize about a black and white themed house with crystal chandeliers all over. It's so elegantly beautiful!
